UPDATE!! Spotify has launched a portal for artists to claim and control their artists profiles on Spotify. Sign up and claim your profile today!
Here is Spotify’s official announcement.
This was initially launched as Fan Insights months or maybe even a year ago. My publishing company (UL Sounds) has had a profile on the platform since it was first in Beta. With that said, it is developing into a valuable tool for artists on all levels of the playing field.
This is a question that keeps popping up and it’s a great one.
Unless you’ve combed through Spotify’s online documentation aka their Guides and Best Practices, you probably have no clue how to change your photo or update the information on your Spotify Artist Profile.
Unforutnately, there’s no simple or quick way to do it but you can find the steps below.
Where does Spotify get Artist information?
Spotify pulls their information from the Rovi database which is the same database used by All Music.com.
If you can’t find your band or artist profile on All Music.com, then the first step is to get yourself listed in the Rovi database.
The All Music FAQ references two links in almost every answer to questions related to adding or correcting artist or album information.
How To Submit or Correct All Music.com Artist Profiles
To submit to the Rovi database, go to All Music’s Product Submissions Page.
If you find your profile but it is incomplete, inaccurate, or needs to be updated; you will find a Submit Corrections link at the bottom of the right-sidebar on your existing All Music profile.
Here is a screenshot with the Corrections link highlighted. The profile for my group BUNKS only includes one album released in 2008 and has no information about our group, the songs on the one album listed, and no photos.
Our name is also wrong; the proper display should be BUNKS or B.U.N.K.S.
After speaking with a friend who has an extensive music catalog, we came to the conclusion that All Music and Rovi retrieve the majority of their information from physical products such as CDs, DVDs, etc.
How the BUNKS’ Generica album ended up in their database and on All Music.com with NO info or photos is beyond me, but I have submitted corrections and hope they go through.
As of right now, my stage name J.Smo does not exist in the database. That will change soon.
Will Rovi accept submissions without physical product?
Yes. For music, you can email content.music@rovicorp.com but you should go read through All Music’s Product Submission page before you contact them.
You will also find information about how long the process takes plus more at the above link.
How to update artist image on Spotify
If you have a Rovi ID, you can fill out this simple form on SpotifyArtists.com to update your photo.
The submission process takes approximately 2 weeks.
Summary
Whether you love or hate Spotify, it’s here to stay and it’s only growing.
If you’re an artist with music on Spotify, you need to embrace their platform and appreciate them for being ONE OF THE FEW who are actually paying out to artists.
The services that pop up the most on my BMI and monthly streaming statements are Spotify and YouTube. iTunes, Deezer and Xbox Music are others I see regularly but Spotify pays the most.
My partner and friend Michael at UL Sounds has been crunching 6 months of streaming revenue data to determine who is paying the most per stream to our growing roster of artists.
So who is in the lead?
Spotify is currently paying our artists the most with YouTube coming in second.
With that said, hopefully this information helps you get your Spotify profiles updated and under control.
